Hoarseness

I have hoarseness, what should I do?

Hoarseness is basically change in voice where voice becomes either raspy or breathy or strained or there may be change in pitch or the volume. This can be due to many reasons like infection or inflammation of the vocal cords, misuse or over use of voice, chronic GERD, vocal cord polyp, nodule, cyst or hemorrhage or it may indicate cancer of larynx, there may be paralysis of vocal cord or it may be manifestation of some other neurological problem.

If the hoarseness is continuing for long even after treatment one should definitely visit ENT specialist. ENT specialist will analyze the medical history and do some clinical examination which will include flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy with stroboscopy. In some conditions imaging may be required. So it is very important not to neglect hoarseness for long and get it checked.
